Only the gas station across the street was still there to service the few Death Valley tourists and other bypasses. But once mining operations moved elsewhere in 1925, and the small town went into a rapid decline.īy the time Marta and her husband moved to Death Valley Junction in 1967, the town was abandoned. It served as a venue for church services, movies, dances, funerals, and town meetings. The theater, named Corkhill Hall, was the miners’ one-for-all recreation hall. Death Valley Railroad started operations, and the Pacific Borax Company constructed buildings in the town to design a Spanish Colonial style hotel, theater, and office complex for the workers of the Borax Company. ![]() ![]() The small town had its heyday in the early 1900s when the Borax Industry was in full swing. Marta discovered Death Valley Junction, the former Pacific Coast Borax Company Town, when it was already way into its decline. Inspired and confirmed by that, Marta convinced her husband to take the step, leave New York, and start this new adventure.ĭeath Valley Junction – The Pacific Coast Borax Company Town The building seemed to be saying, ‘Take me… do something with me… I offer you life.’Įarlier that year, a fortune-teller had predicted that she would leave New York for a place far away and that she would spend the rest of her life there. In her own words, “Peering through the tiny hole, I had the distinct feeling that I was looking at the other half of myself. She peeked through a hole in a door and found herself looking into the old theater that would become the Amargos Opera House and her future. And while her husband tended to the car, Marta explored the nearby buildings. While on a performance tour of the West, she and her husband got stuck at Amargosa due to a flat tire. In the spring of 1967, Marta Becket, by then a 43-year-old, aging but still successful dancer and artist, came to Death Valley Junction by coincidence. ![]()
